INTRODUCING MAIRI MICKEL
I’m Mairi Mickel – and I’m here to help. As a fourth generation member of a business family, I understand – perhaps more than most – the challenges faced by business families during periods of transition. I founded Mairi Mickel’s Business Families in 2012 to provide business families with specialist continuity or exit planning support. Since then, I’ve helped a wide range of owners (in the UK and internationally) to future proof both their family business and their business family for this generation, the next and the next after that.
As a neutral but empathetic advisor and consultant, my role is to work systemically in that challenging space between business, family and ownership systems, identifying and resolving tensions as well as supporting and enabling the business and personal aspirations of the owners. Although I work within an established and goal-oriented process, my approach is completely bespoke and often highly intuitive, responding to the needs of each individual client. In a family business, conflict is normal (and often painful) but with an effective family business advisor in place it can be expertly managed to a more tolerable level. I firmly believe in planning for both business and family success, and in the benefits of good communication and clear boundaries to get us there. Successful businesses should be successful because of the business family, not despite it.

My advanced training as a family business advisor and qualified coach, as well as my own personal experience, lets me work collaboratively with business families – both emerging and well-established – and their trusted professional advisors, in response to either a crisis situation or as part of a planned transition programme. With ten years’ boardroom experience, coupled with my roles as a shareholder of Mactaggart & Mickel, a trustee of the Mickel Fund and a governance trainer for the IOD, I bring a combination of theory and practice, empathy and experience to your needs. You’re in very safe hands!
